GRAFTON, Mass. -- The Bates College men's cross country team opened the season with a second-place at the Tufts University Hayseed Classic.

Leading the way for the Bobcats were two runners among the top 10. Sophomore Justin Easter (Jay, Maine) placed third overall with a time of 27:08. Easter was 17 seconds off the lead, and his time was Bates' third-best performance on Tufts' course in Grafton. Classmate Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.) joined Easter in the top 10 by taking seventh place with a time of 28:30 over the 8K course.

The Bobcats' other scorers were sophomore Eric Knackmuhs (Wycoff, N.J.), who took 22nd place (29:46); junior tri-captain Ben Bruce (Malvern, Pa.) in 24th place (30:13); and senior tri-captain Steve Mague (Londonderry, N.H.) in 27th place (30:26).
