BATES OPENS SEASON WITH 81-64 WIN AT SOUTHERN MAINE
Adams Qualifies Provisionally For Nationals

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College men's indoor track and field team got the 1999-2000 season off to a fine start by defeating the University of Southern Maine in a dual meet, 81-64, as the Bobcats won 12 of 17 events.

Leading the way was Bates senior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) who did not waste any time in qualifying for his third straight NCAA Indoor track and field championships, winning the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 56 feet, 3/4 inches. Adams also won the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, one inch. Senior Kevin Stroman (New York, N.Y.), in his first meet in over a year after spending his junior year abroad, won the triple jump by 1/4 of an inch with a leap of 41 feet, 11 3/4 inches. The Bobcats also swept the distance events, even without their two cross country All-Americans, as first-year runner Eric Knackmuhs (Wycoff, N.J.) won the 1000-meter run, senior John McGrath (Merrimack, N.H.) took the mile run, and junior Chris Lupo (Portsmouth, R.I.) captured the 5000-meters.
