BATES MEN WIN QUAD CUP IV
Adams Smashes School Record In Weight Throw

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's track and field team used the home facility to its advantage as the Bobcats ran away with the final Quad Cup meet of the season by winning 12 of the 18 events.

Leading the way for the Bobcats was senior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.). Adams, a two-time All-American in the 35-pound weight throw for the men, won his event with a throw of 64 feet, 2 inches, shattering the previous mark of 60-2 3/4 set by Peter Goodrich in 1989 by nearly four feet. Adams, who had already been provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, reached the automatic standard with the best throw in the nation to date. A similar toss at the NCAA championships would have set a national Division III record. The throw could potentially have gone farther if not for a protective barrier for spectators. Adams, who also captured the shot put for the second week in a row, led a group of Bobcats in the top four spots of the weight throw.

Adams proved to be the only multiple winner on the day, but the Bobcats also got several other outstanding performances. Senior Jeff Snyder (Glastonbury, Conn.) won the high jump with a leap of 6-5, just missing on his attempt to qualify for nationals at 6-7 3/4. The first-year class provided a pair of wins as well, with Stephan Gresham (Milton, Mass.) taking the 400-meter run in 50.43 seconds, and Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.) winning the long jump with a leap of 21-1 3/4.

The Bobcats' next meet is next Saturday with the State of Maine Championships at Southern Maine.
