Harvard and Tufts Invitationals
BOBCATS IMPRESS AT HARVARD AND TUFTS CAMBRDIGE/MEDFORD, Mass. -- A split group of Bates track and field athletes took part in non-scoring meets at Harvard and Tufts, reaching several milestones in the process. In the first competition at Tufts' new indoor track facilty, senior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) improved upon his provisional NCAA Division III qualifying mark in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 56 feet, 9.5 inches, establishing a facility record for the second week in a row. Fellow Bobcat Rob Davis (Rehoboth, Mass.) took second witha heave of 51 feet, 4.5 inches. Also at Tufts, first-year jumper Bryan Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed among the top three with a high jump of 6-0. While the field events were at Tufts, the runners were at Harvard. Leading the way as he did during cross country season, senior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) won the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:46.77, joining Adams as a provisional qualifier for the NCAAs. Danahy is three seconds shy of the automatic qualification. Danahy earned All-America honors in the 5K last year. First-year runner Stephan Gresham (Milton, Mass.) continued to impress, taking third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.28, establisbing a new Bates record. His time was less than half a second off the provisional NCAA mark. Placing just behind him was sophomore Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.), whose fourth-place finish in 50.48 also topped the previous school record of 50.54 that Zwick had set last year. The Bates mile-relay team finished second to Boston College with a time of 3:30.47. Sophomore Ryan Deery (Danvers, Mass.) opened the relay, with Luoma, Zwick and Gresham rounding out the group. Senior Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) took fourth place in the 5K with a time of 15:12.12, while first-year runner Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.) placed well with a 9:04.32 in the 3,000-meter run. Senior John McGrath (Merrimack, N.H.) rounded out the top Bates performances with a 4:27.89 in the mile, good for fourth place.
