BATES MEN TAKE THIRD IN SEASON-OPENING QUAD CUP MEET

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the first scored meet held in the Walter Slovenski Indoor Track, the Bates College men's track and field team placed third in a Quad Cup competition. Division II UMass-Lowell won the meet with 190.5 points, while MIT edged Bates, 179-166.5. The University of Southern Maine took fourth place with 60 points.

The Bobcats got victories in four of the 17 events. Senior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) captured the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 55 feet, as the Bobcats captured the top four spots in the event. Senior Rob Davis (Rehoboth, Mass.), who placed second with a heave of 52-4 1/2, became Bates' second provisional qualifier in the weight throw, joining Adams, while third-place finisher, sophomore Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.) qualified for the Open New England championships with a throw of 50 feet even.

Cross country All-Americans Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) won the mile-run and 5,000-meter run, respectively. Junior captain Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.) was Bates' final winner in he 200-meter dash. Zwick missed being a multiple event winner by one-hundredth of a second in the 400-meter dash, setting the school record with a time of 49.94 seconds in the process.
