SAWLER QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS AT FIRST MEET

BOSTON, Mass. — In the non-scoring Northeastern Husky Invitational, the Bates men's track and field team opened the 2002 outdoor season impressively. The Bobcats had four athletes finish in the top five as the top Division III competitor in his event.

Leading the way, as he did during the indoor season, senior Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) placed third in the hammer throw with a heave of 184-2, an automatic qualifier for the NCAAs. He also placed eighth in the discus with a toss of 141-6. Rookie Joel Anderson (New Brighton, Minn.) placed fourth in the 10,000-meters in 33:12.63. Junior Matt Ondra (New Tripoli, Pa.) was fifth in the pole vault with a height of 13-5, while classmate Stephen Gresham (Milton, Mass.) took fifth in the 400-meters with a time of 50.31 seconds.

The Bobcats host their first outdoor track meet since the 1970s this weekend when they host the Bates Invitational on the Lafayette Street Track.
