BATES DOWNS COLBY IN DUAL MEET

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior captain Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) was one of seven Bates College men's track and field performers to win individual events today as the Bobcats defeated CBB rival Colby, 91-77, in a dual meet.

Sawler was the Bobcats' only multiple winner on the afternoon, capturing the 35-pound weight throw and the shot put. His life-time best toss of 60 feet, 7 3/4 inches in the weight throw is presently the top throw of the season in NCAA Division III. Sawler won the shot with a throw of 45 feet, nine inches. Bates got two other victories in field events as junior Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the high jump at a height of 5-10, while sophomore Matt Ondra (New Tripoli, Pa.) took the pole vault with a height of 13 feet even.

In the track events, junior captain Stephen Gresham (Milton, Mass.) was the Bobcats' lone victor in the sprints, winning the 600-meter dash in 1:24.68. Bates took the three longest distance events, with junior captain Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.) winning the 1,000 in 2:37.02, first-year runner Joel Anderson (New Brighton, Minn.) capturing the mile in 4:27.90, and classmate Robert Gomez (Waldoboro, Maine) winning the 3,000 with a time of 9:17.93.
