BATES COED INVITATIONAL

LEWISTON, Maine —Four Bates track and field athletes set facility records as the Bobcats hosted their first outdoor meet since 1976 on April 6.

Senior Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) missed Lucas Adams '00's school record in the hammer throw by less than a foot with a heave of 191-9, best in the nation this season by more than seven feet. Classmate Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.) was second in the hammer, also qualifying provisionally for nationals with a distance of 171-0. Junior Matt Ondra (New Tripoli, Pa.) won the pole vault with a vault of 12-3, four inches better than teammate Patrick Cunningham (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).

On the track, junior Justin Easter (Jay, Maine) took the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:29.99, 13 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. First-year runner Andrius Staisiunas (Panevezys, Lithuania) captured the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.33. Rookie Mitchell Krauss (Clayton, Mo.) placed second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while junior Stephen Gresham (Milton, Mass.) was runner-up in the 400. Junior Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) took second in the triple jump.
