BATES FALLS TO SOUTHERN MAINE BY ONE IN OPENER

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's indoor track and field dropped their annual season-opening meet against Southern Maine today by the slimmest of margins, 68-67, despite winning nine of 16 events.

Senior captain Kevin Jackson (Woodbury, N.J.) led the way for the Bobcats, placing in the top four in three different events. Jackson won the 55-meter hurdles by .11 second with a time of 8.13, tied for second with a high jump of 5-6, and placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 35-8.75. Junior Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) won the 35-pound weight throw and placed secnd in the shot. Other winners for Bates included senior Andrew Wheeler (Colrain, Mass.) in the pole vault, sophomore Erik Knackmuhs (Wyckoff, N.J.) in the mile and classmate Stephen Gresham (Milton, Mass.) in the 600-meter dash.
