MEN'S TRACK TAKES SECOND AT USM
Hurley Meets NCAA Provisional Mark, Sawler Approaches Auto

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College men's track and field team earned a second-place finish for the second week in a row at today's Southern Maine Co-ed Invitational. The Bobcats earned four first-place finishes to place ahead of UMass Dartmouth, Rhode Island College and Fitchburg State and behind host USM.

Leading the way for the Bobcats were junior weight throwers Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) and Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.), who took the top spot in the 35-pound weight throw. Sawler won the event with a heave of 56-7, just five inches shy of the NCAA Division III Championship automatic qualifying mark. Sawler qualified provisionally last week, while Hurley added his name to the NCAA list with a second-place toss of 52-8.

Other event winners for the Bobcats were senior captain Kevin Jackson (Woodbury, N.J.), who took the 55-meter hurdles for the second week in a row with a time of 8.01. First-year pole vaulter Matt Ondra (New Tripoli, Pa.) picked up his first collegiate win with a height of 13-3, while classmate Robert Brooks (Eastford, Conn.) captured the 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.69. Bates picked up a relay win in the 4x400 (3.39.08).
