LEWISTON, Maine Ð The Bates College men's indoor track and field team had seven champions out of 17 events when the Bobcats hosted the State of Maine Intercollegiate Championships at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.
In one of the most unusual races in state meet history, Bates won the final event, the 4x800-meter relay in a blackout in the Slovenski Indoor Track. The runners, sophomore Eric Knackmuhs of Wycoff, N.J., junior Justin Pagnotta of Hookset, N.H., first-year runner Trent Lierman of Bethesda, Md., and sophomore Malcolm Gray of Bronxville, N.Y., began the race with the lights on. Midway through the first lap, with Knackmuhs in second place and the wind howling outside, power to the track blew out briefly, plunging the facility into darkness. When power came back several seconds later, the track was still mostly dark, with most of the light coming from the fluorescent bulbs in the lobby and other secondary sources. The halogen lamps that illuminate the main track, requiring minutes to brighten, remained dark. A brief attempt was made to stop the race as officials tried to flag down the runners, but once the first lap was completed without incident, the race was allowed to continue.
Further confusion arose on the second leg of the race, when Pagnotta, in first place, handed off to Lierman after just three laps (600 meters) instead of four (800 meters), with all the other runners following suit. Bates managed to hold off the runner from second-place Bowdoin College, but the times were discarded because of the nontraditional length of the event.
"I had never seen anything like that in my life," said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian. "But once those runners decided to continue, there was no stopping them. It was all about the race at that point, and everyone said it was the most fun they have had at a track meet in a long time."
The Bobcats also had six other champions at the event. Senior captain Erik Zwick of Virginia Beach, Va., was one of two multiple champions for Bates. He won the 200-meter dash in a school- and facility-record time of 22.39 seconds, breaking his own mark set last year of 22.49 seconds. Zwick also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.11 seconds, 0.66 seconds ahead of teammate Stephen Gresham of Milton, Mass.
Junior captain Jaime Sawler of Stratham, N.H., was the Bobcats' other multiple winner on the evening. Sawler won the 35-pound weight throw, with a distance of 55 feet, 1/2 inch, to remain undefeated in the event this season. He is currently ranked sixth in the nation in the event. Sawler also won the shot put for the second time this season with a heave of 46 feet, 11 1/4 inches.
Senior captain Kevin Jackson of Woodbury, N.J., had the most productive day for the Bobcats, winning the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.87 seconds and scoring points in three other events. Jackson finished fourth in the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches), fifth in the 55-meter dash (6.75 seconds) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.50 seconds). Jackson completed the impressive performance despite injuring his hand while competing in the long jump.
Rookie Matt Ondra of New Tripoli, Pa., was Bates' final winner, capturing the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet. It was the third week in a row that Ondra won the event for the Bobcats, with each win at a height of at least 13 feet. Ondra was one of just three first-year athletes to win an event at the state meet. As a team, Bates finished second with 167 points, behind defending champion Bowdoin College (207 points). Between them, Bates and Bowdoin won 16 of the 17 events at the meet. The University of Southern Maine placed third with 91 points and Colby was fourth with 54 points.
