SAWLER QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS IN WEIGHT THROW
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College junior Jaime Sawler of Stratham, N.H.,, took the top spots in the 35-pound weight throw, provisionally qualifying for the 2001 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field championships today as the Bobcats placed second to MIT, ahead of the United State Coast Guard Academy in today's Bates College Invitational.
Sawler won the event on his last throw with a heave of 53 feet, 4 1/2 inches (16.27m). Classmate Greg Hurley of Arlington, Mass., took second, missing the provisional qualifying mark of 52 feet (15.85m) by a quarter of an inch with a toss of 51-11 3/4 (15.84m). Sawler also won the shot put with a heave of 43 feet, 4 3/4 inches (13.25m).
The Bobcats also got an impressive performance from senior Kevin Jackson of Woodbury, N.J. Jackson set three personal records, winning the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 2.25 inches and the 55-meter hurdles in 7.85 seconds, while taking second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds, just .02 off the winning time. Senior Erik Zwick of Virginia Beach, Va., was also a multiple winner, taking the 200- and 400-meter dashes (22.60 and 49.90 seconds)
