BATES MEN'S TENNIS OPENS WITH IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT MIDDLEBURY

LEWISTON, Maine Ð The Bates College men's tennis team opened their 2000 season with an impressive showing at the Middlebury College Invitational tournament Sept. 16-17, winning titles in three of the six flights for the second straight year.

Leading the way for the Bobcats was sophomore Brett Carty of Belle Meade, N.J., who won all eight matches he played at singles and doubles. Carty breezed through the first round of the 'C' Flight singles, 6-0, 6-0, over a foe from Skidmore College. In the second round against the third seed in the flight from the host Middlebury Panthers, Carty used a pair of late breaks to win, 7-5, 7-5. Carty then dispatched a pair of foes from in-state rival Bowdoin College, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals and 6-2, 7-6, against the top seed in the finals. Carty and classmate David Meyer of Weston, Conn., won the 'B' doubles flight rather handily, with their only trouble coming in the second round, when the third seeds from Middlebury extended them to a tie breaker, 9-8, in the pro set. The Bobcats survived the tiebreak, 7-5, and went on to defeat the top seeds from Bowdoin, 8-5, in the finals.

Bates also got a top performance in the 'A' singles flight, where senior Greg Norton of Mansfield, Mass., and sophomore Alex MacDonald of Bridgewater, Conn., both advanced to the finals by defeating a nationally-ranked opponent. Norton dispatched No. 6 Marc Hill of the College of New Jersey, 6-3, 7-6, in the semifinals, while MacDonald took out No. 33 Colin Joyner of Bowdoin, 6-2, 6-4, in the same round. MacDonald prevailed in the flight finals, 6-2, 6-2, for his second career title at Middlebury. MacDonald won the 'C' doubles flight in 1999.
