The Bobcats were unable to repeat one of their great wins of the 1997 season, falling to New England No. 2 Plymouth State College, 2-0, in New Hampshire.

The Bobcats (1-2) and Panthers had a similar number of chances to score. Both Bates senior Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) and the PSC goalie made seven saves. The Panthers were able to convert once in each half. The first half goal came off a direct kick.
