Bates at Norwich, Sept. 12 - The Bates College men's soccer team kicked off the 1997 season with an impressive 5-0 win against the Norwich University Cadets. Junior co-captain Chad LaFauci (North Andover, Mass.) got the scoring started in the 11th minute on an unassisted goal. He was followed 11 minutes later by first-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.). The Bobcats added three goals in the second half, including one jus over one minute in by junior Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) on an assist from sophomore Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.). The defense was strong also, allowing just five shots on goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.), who earned his second career shutout.

Bates at Middlebury, Sept. 13 - In a meeting of New England top 10 teams, No. 3 Middlebury downed No. 10 Bates, 2-0, in Vermont. Most of the action took place in the Panthers' end of the field. The Bobcats were outshot 22-4. Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) kept the game close, recording 12 saves, but the Bates offense managed just one shot on goal.

Plymouth State at Bates, Sept. 20 - The Bates College men's soccer team (2-1) needed overtime to defeat No. 6 in New England Plymouth State College (3-2), 3-2. With the game tied at one at halftime, the Panthers came out quickly in the second, knocking home a header off a corner kick just over six minutes in. Play went back and forth the rest of the second half, until junior forward Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) headed home his second goal of the game on a nifty cross from sophomore midfielder Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.). The game was decided seven minutes into overtime when first-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) notched his third goal of the season on a penalty kick.

Husson at Bates, Sept. 24 - The Bates College men's soccer team won its second straight home non-conference game behind a first-half hat trick from first-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.). All hree goals were headed in off a crossing pass. The first goal came in the 23rd minute of play from junior co-captain Chad LaFauci (North Andover, Mass.). The second was six minutes later from junior forward Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) The third was in the 38th minute from fellow first-year player Brian Stevens (Southwick, Mass.), who recorded hs first collegiate point. Denton had his first0 collegiate hat trick and now leads the team with six goals and 13 points. LaFauci went on to record two more assists in the second half, one a beautiful downfield lead pass to sophomore Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.), the second a scrum in front of the net whch was blasted home by senior JK Werner (Arlington, Vt.).

Tufts at Bates, Sept. 27 - The Bobcats (4-1) knocked Tufts (4-1) from among the undefeated team in New England, picking up their first win over the Jumbos since 1986, 3-1. Sophomore Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) was the key to the win, picking up a pair of goals. Apstein opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, taking a pass from first-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) on the right side of the crease and knocking it into the far corner. Apstein went down later in the first half on a sliding tackle, but junior Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) got revenge by knocking home the Bobcats' second goal on an assist by senior Billy Fischer (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Apstein returned in the second half and hooked up with Denton again for his second goal, just under eight minutes into the period. Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) was solid in goal, stopping seven of the Jumbos' eight shots on goal.

Bates at Williams, Oct. 4 - The Bobcats (4-2), ranked fifth in New England, saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt at the hands of the fourth-ranked Williams College (5-1) Ephs, 2-1. Neither team scored in a well-played first half, which featured outstanding goalkeeping by junior Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.), who stopped a pair of point blank shots. In the second half, Williams scored a pair of goals off corner kicks, one off a rebound, the other from the top of the 18. Junior co-captain Chad LaFauci (North Andover, Mass.) put the Bobcats on the board with 9:30 to go in the game, but they were unable to score the equalizer. Anton had 10 saves in the losing effort.

Gordon at Bates, Oct. 9 - First-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) notched his third career multiple goal game as the Bobcats (5-2) downed the Gordon College Fightin Scots (6-4), 2-1. The first half was played mostly in the Gordon zone. Towards the end of the half, Denton looked to have scored his first goal of the game, but he was ruled offsides. Thirty minutes into the second half, Denton was hauled down from behind in the box and put away the penalty kick to open the scoring. Just over ten minutes later, he added an insurance goal, taking a pass from senior J.K. Werner (Arlington, Vt.) and firing it home from 20 yards out. Bates needed the insurance when the Scots answered just 30 seconds later. The Bates defense, led by co-captain Matt Ferrigno (Southwick, Mass.) was outstanding, allowing just two shots on goal. Denton now has eight goals on the season, the most for any Bates player since Derek Cook '94 had 11 in 1994.

Wheaton at Bates, Oct. 11 - The Bobcats (5-3) missed a chance to get off to the second-best start in school history, dropping a 4-2 decision to Wheaton College (8-3). Bates got on the scoreboard first, when Steven Coco (Auburn, N.H.) put home a side volley off a cross from first-year midfielder Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) at the 15-minute mark. The Lyons answered ten minutes later, and the score was tied at halftime. Wheaton scored the first two goals of the second half to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Junior Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) pulled the Bobcats within one just two minutes after Wheaton's third goal, heading in Sporcic's corner kick, but the Lyons got the goal back three minutes later on a break away. Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) made nine saves in the losing effort.

Bates at Connecticut College, Oct. 18 - The Bobcats (5-4) lost their second straight game, dropping a 4-1 decision at Connecticut College (6-3-2) at the Camels' homecoming game. Conn College opened the scoring quickly, just two minutes into the game, and extended the lead three minutes into the seconf half. Sophomore midfielder Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) scored the Bobcats' only goal at the 56-minute mark, firing the ball high to the center of the net. The Camels scored twice more on the afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) had seven saves in the loss.

St. Anselm at Bates, Oct. 22 - Despite a valiant comeback effort to tie the match late, the Bobcats (5-5) fell in overtime, 2-1, to Division II Saint Anselm College (9-5). The Hawks got on the board first, ten minutes into the game on a shot from 20 yards out that found the far corner. The game went back and forth, with both teams having chances, but neither capitalizing. Then, with the Bobcats controling the play in the last five minutes, St. A's had a hand ball in the box off a Bates corner kick. Leading scorer Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) scored his ninth of the season to send the game into overtime. With less than three minuts remaining in the second extra period, the Hawks got a good chance and converted the rebound for the win.

Bates at Colby, Oct. 25 The Bobcats (5-5-1) tied Colby (6-5-1) in their CBB opener in Waterville. Junior Stephen Coco (Auburn, N.H.) scored a goal in the second half to tie the game, heading in an assist from Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.). Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) made four saves.

University of New England at Bates, Oct. 28 - Coach George Purgavie's men's soccer team (6-5-1) snapped a four-game winless streak by knocking off the University of New England Nor'Easters (11-4-1), the fifth-ranked team in the most recent NAIA New England polls. All three Bates goals came in the first half from their top three scorers. Sophomore Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass., 6-3-15) had a pair of unassisted goals, the second of which came from 12 yards out with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Junior forward Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H., 6-2-14) scored his first goal in three games on an assist from first-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass., 9-4-22). Junior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) made five save in his second shutout of the season. The Bobcats next take on Bowdoin this Saturday. A Bates win would give the Bobcats their second straight CBB title.

Bowdoin at Bates, Nov. 1 - Coach George Purgavie's men' soccer team (6-6-1) had a golden chance to capture their second straight CBB title, but a pair of goals late Bowdoin goals (10-3) ended those hopes. After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats came out strong and took advantage of a listless Bowdoin defense to grab a 1-0 lead on a Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) goal which was set up by Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) just 1:30 into the second frame. After Bates had the better of play for much of the second half, Bowdoin tied the affair off a direct kick with under eight minutes to go in regulation. Then, for the second time in the last three overtime games, the Bobcats gave up the game-winner with two and a half minutes to go. Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) had four saves in the effort.

Massachuetts College of Liberal Arts at Bates, Nov. 8  - The Bobcats (7-6-1) finished their regular season on a positive note, downing Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (9-9), 1-0. The two teams played a back and forth game in the first half. The Bobcats got a couple of good chances which went over the goal and wide, but were unable to convert. Bates dominated the second half, though, picking up the only goal of the game 11 minutes into the game when junior Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) took a feed from classmate Chad LaFauci (North Andover, Mass.), split two defenders and put the ball under the Mohawk goalie's arms and into the net. First-year midfielder Lakota Denton (Bernardston, Mass.) had a terrific chance to ice the game, sneaking past the goalie on a breakaway, but a Mass. College defender came out of nowhere to block Denton's shot. Junior goalkeeper made three outstanding saves in the game to earn his third shutout of the season.
