BOBCATS BREEZE PAST UNIV. OF NEW ENGLAND, 6-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats (6-4-1), ranked 19th in the nation in NCAA Division III play in shutouts per game, blanked their seventh opponent of the season with a 6-0 defeat of the visiting University of New England Nor'Easters (6-8-1) on Lafayette Street Field today.

The Bobcats got on the board in the 14th minute when senior Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) sent the ball along the goal line to first-year forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.), who headed the ball in for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. With his eighth assist of the year, Apstein matched Bates' single-season record, tying Derek Cook '94, who set the mark in 1992.

Junior halfback Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) added Bates' second goal 11 minutes later on a blast from just outside the box. First-year midfielder Mike Masi (York, Maine) doubled the Bobcats' lead with two goals in the first half, the first coming off a corner kick when he came away with a rebound off the foot of junior back Bryan Stevens (Southwich, Mass.) that hit off the crossbar. Bates also got second half goals from sophomore Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.) and Alex Cutler (Worcester, Mass.), the first of the season for both.

Bates sophomore Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Emlen Harmon (So. Berwick, Maine) combined for the shutout. Harmon had four saves in the second half. The Bobcats are now one shutout shy of the school single-season record of eight, set in 1992. UNE keeper Ian Nagus (Ipswich, Mass.) made three saves in the first half, while senior Rich Niles (Merrimack, N.H.) had six in the second half, including a Bates penalty shot. The Bobcats enjoyed a 25-5 shot advantage over the Nor'Easters. Bates next plays Saturday at Colby College at 11 a.m., while UNE concludes the regular season at 6-8-1.
