BATES MEN'S SOCCER ROUTS PLYMOUTH STATE, 4-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College senior Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) had two goals and an assist as the Bobcats (3-2) defeated the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers (5-5), 4-0, here today.

The Bobcats got all the scoring they would need in the 10th minute, as senior back Justin Wang (No. Andover, Mass.) won a race to a loose ball and sent it downfield, where first-year forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) avoided a tackle and went in one-on-one against Plymouth goalkeeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.). The Bobcats increased the lead in the 20 minutes later, as senior back Ted Martin (Excelsior, Minn.) blasted home a rebound of Apstein's shot.

Martin returned the favor in the second half, making a beautiful cross from the edge of the center circle to Apstein, who was standing outside the 18 to Wilby's left. Apstein rifled a left-footed shot off the far post and in. He tacked on his second goal of the game less than four minutes later, again from just outside the box, this time off a direct kick.

Bates sophomore Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Emlen Harmon (So. Berwick, Maine) combined to make six saves in the shutout, while the Wilby made six saves for the Panthers. Martin also helped contribute to the shutout, twice clearing the ball from an open net.

The Bobcats play host to NESCAC foe Tufts, ranked fourth in New England on Saturday, while Plymouth State travels to Little East opponent Keene State, No. 5 in the region.
