BATES MEN'S SOCCER CAPTURES CBB CROWN WITH 2-0 SHUTOUT OF BOWDOIN

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (9-4-1) wrapped up their first CBB crown since 1996 with a 2-0 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (7-5-2) on Lafayette Street Field today.

The Bobcats got all the scoring they would need from junior Bryan Stevens (Southwick, Mass.), who struck a perfect volley from 20 yards out to beat Bowdoin senior keeper Tom Casarella (Ashford, Conn.) with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Bates senior forward Andy Apstein scored his 25th career goal in the second half, tying him for second all-time among Bates goal scorers with Dieudonne Ngnoumen '71.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Emlen Harmon (So. Berwick, Maine) combined to make four saves and post the Bobcats' fifth consecutive shutout, breaking a record the Bobcats had tied earlier this season. It also marks Bates' school-record 10th shutout overall. The Bobcats have not allowed a goal in 450 minutes. The Bobcats and Polar Bears end the regular season and will find out if there is any postseason in their future on Monday.
