BATES MEN'S SOCCER OUTLASTS UMF, 1-0

FARMINGTON, Maine — In a game postponed because of the events of Sept. 11, the Bates College men's soccer team (5-4-2) defeated the host Maine-Farmington Beavers (9-3), 1-0, to finish up a three-game road trip with a 1-0-2 record.

,The Bobcats recorded their fourth shutout of the season thanks to the performances of sophomore goalkeeper Chris Mansfield (Lincoln, Mass.), who made one save in his first career start, and rookie James Kenly (Boxford, Mass.), who made two stops in his first varsity action. Bates handed the Beavers just their third shutout of the season. The Bobcats were playing without goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) for the first time in three years. Junior forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored his third goal of the season in the 27th minute for the game's only tally.
