BATES DOWNS MAINE-FARMINGTON IN SEASON OPENER, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (1-0) made an early goal hold as the Bobcats defeated the visiting Maine-Farmington Beavers (1-1), 1-0, in a light drizzle today.

Bates scored the only goal of the game at the 11:08 mark when junior midfielder Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.) fed a through ball to a streaking Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.), who punched the ball past UMF keeper Mike Houser (So. Portland, Maine). The goal was the seventh of Sporcic's career, while Weymouth notched his eighth career assist.

Bates controlled the physical play for the rest of the match, outshooting Maine-Farmington, 13-7, but could not tally again. Junior goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) made four saves to record his 11th career shutout for the Bobcats. Houser and senior Glenn Mirlocca (Litchfield, N.H.) combined to make four saves in the losing effort. The win was Bates' third in a row over the Beavers. The Bobcats next face Amherst on Sept. 16.
