BATES FALLS TO NO. 21 MIDDLEBURY, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (6-5, 2-4 NESCAC) saw their two-game winning streak snapped today at the hands of the No. 21 team in the nation, the Middlebury College Panthers (8-1-2, 5-1-2 NESCAC), 1-0.

The game's only tally came just under 12 minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder Sergey Cherednichenko (Scottsville, N.Y.) inbounded the ball to junior Nelson Martelle (Burlington, Vt.). Martell then found classmate Brian Lavin (Potomac, Md.) open at the six-yard line, where he volleyed the ball past Bates goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.). The loss marks just the second time the Bobcats have been shut out this season. Spector had six saves in the losing effort, while Middlebury keeper Brian Hamm (Terryville, Conn.) made two saves for the win.
