OVERTIME PK LIFTS BATES PAST NO. 14 AMHERST, 2-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College senior midfielder Bryan Stevens (Southwick, Mass.) knocked home a penalty kick just over three minutes into overtime to give the Bobcat men's soccer team a 2-1 win over the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs, who entered the game ranked 14th in the most recent NSCAA Division III national poll.

Stevens got the game-winning opportunity when senior forward Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) sent a cross through the box that deflected off an Amherst defender's hand. The Bobcats (2-0-0, 1-0-0 NESCAC) got on the board first 30 minutes into the game. Sophomore forward Nick MacInnis (Andover, Mass.) sent a ball along the end line to classmate Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.), who tallied his first goal of the season and the 10th of his career. Amherst (2-1-0, 1-1-0 NESCAC) scored the equalizer in the 77th minute, when rookie forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, Conn.) took a loose ball inside the Bates box and slid it past Bobcat goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.).

Spector made 12 saves in the winning effort, while Amherst keeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, Conn.) had three stops in taking the loss. The win was Bates' first over the Lord Jeffs since 1992.
