BOBCATS TOP TRINITY, 12-11, IN THIRD STRAIGHT OT GAME

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior midfielder Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his second goal of the game with 33 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Bates College Bobcats a cruicial New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse victory over the Trinity College Bantams at Harvard University. With the win, Bates virtually wraps up its first trip to the NESCAC tournament, pending results on Saturday's final day of the regular season.

Bates (8-5, 4-4 NESCAC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period on unassisted goals by rookie midfielder Dan Ross (Chevy Chase, Md.) and seniors Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.) and Jack Sandler (Hickville, N.Y.). The Bantams stormed out in the second, scoring four goals in the first three minutes, 10 seconds of the frame. Trinity sophomore Dave Huoppi (Pomfret, Acad.) tied the game at the 12:52 mark and gave the Bantams the lead just 31 seconds later, while classmate James Skiff (Portland, Maine) put them up 5-3 another 31 seconds after that. The Bobcat defense clamped down for the remainder of the half and the offense got goals from four different players, including Frederick's goal at 1:14 to reclaim the lead at 6-5 and junior Jon Fador's (Winchester, Mass.) tally with one second on the clock to give Bates a two-goal halftime cushion.

Trinity (2-10, 2-6 NESCAC) scored first in the third, less than a minute in, but Sandler and Brad Frost (Winchester, Mass.) put the Bobcats back up, 9-6, with 4:06 left in the period. The Bantams cut the lead to one with the first two tallies of the fourth quarter, but senior Matt Winterle (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, Mass.) both scored, sandwiched around a Huoppi goal, as Bates took an 11-9 lead with 2:50 left. The Bantams took advantage of two Bates penalties in the final two minutes as junior Ravi Pillay (Falls Church, Va.) cut the lead to 11-10 with 61 seconds left and senior Alex Westcott (Princeton, N.J.) forced overtime with two seconds remaining on an assist from Skiff.

The Bobcats outshot Trinity, 5-2 in overtime, but it was Gaughan's tally with 33 seconds left that gave Bates its third overtime win of the season and second in the last three games. Junior Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 11 saves in the win, while Trinity's Eric Wilson (W. Hartford, Conn.) made 11 stops, playing just the second half and overtime, including two stops in the extra period.
