SANDLER GOAL GIVES BATES MEN 9-8
OVERTIME WIN OVER KINGS POINT

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior attack Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored an extra-man goal 20 seconds into the first overtime period to give the Bates College men's lacrosse team a 9-8 non-conference victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) Mariners today.

The game was tight throughout, with neither team taking a lead larger than two goals at any point in the contest. The score was tied at the end of each period; 3-3 after one, 4-4 at the break and 6-6 after the third quarter.

Bates (4-1) look to take control early in the fourth quarter when Sandler scored his first goal of the game just 50 seconds into the stanza. Sophomore Chris Eckhoff (Wolfeboro, N.H.) gave the Bobcats their first two- goal lead of the game with 12:14 left in regulation.

Kings Point (2-3) stormed back on junior attack Nick Watts' (Safety Harbor, Fla.) goal at the 9:51 mark, assisted by junior midfielder Jim Krantz (Downingtown, Pa.). The Mariners scored the equalizer with just 95 seconds left in regulation as Krantz assisted rookie Matt McCarthy (Germantown, Md.).

Kings Point had a chance to score again in the final minute when Bates tried to call a time out it didnot have, but sophomore defender John Saunders (Radnor, Pa.) forced a turnover. Bates got a penalty call on a push with six seconds remaining in regulation. The Bobcats held the ball to retain possession at the start of the extra session, setting up Sandler's goal on a feed from classmate Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.). It was Bates' first extra man conversion of the game.

Bates senior midfielder Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Bobcats with three points (2G, 1A), while Sandler and Eckhoff had two goals apiece. Krantz led Kings Point with four points (2G, 2A), while senior Phil Egge (Alexandria, Va.) had a goal and two assists. Bates junior Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) had 15 saves for Bates' fourth straight win, while the Mariners' Teague Murphy (Stevenville, Md.) had five saves in the losing effort as the Mariners fell to 1-2 in one-goal games this season.
