BOBCATS CRUISE PAST GORDON, 16-4

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back as the Bobcats (2-1) defeated the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots, 16-4, in the first contest on Campus Avenue Field since the tragic March 3 death of Bobcat senior captain Morgan McDuffee.

Following a moment of silence after the playing of the national anthem, the Bobcats opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Chris Eckhoff (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Two of the Bobcats' senior attacks combined for the next two Bates goals as Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored on an assist from Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) at the 6:36 mark. Frederick returned the favor 90 seconds later. Rookie Dana Fallon (Winchester, Mass.) went coast-to-coast to make the game 4-0. Senior Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) hit a pipe but got his own rebound to score the first of his game-high three goals at the 2:13 mark. Sophomore Brad Frost (Winchester, Mass.) scored with 1:17 on the clock in the first to give Bates the 6-0 lead.

Gordon (1-1) junior Ryan Hardin (Broomall, Pa.) got the Scots on the board five minutes into the second quarter, but Bates added two more to take an 8-1 lead at the half. The Bobcats extended the lead to 11-1 with 9:25 left in the third period before the Scots scored three unanswered goals. Senior Matt Chapman (Sewickley, Pa.) scored two and assisted another to cut the deficit to seven, but Bates closed the game on a 5-0 run to take the 16-4 decision.

Sandler led all scorers with six points on two assists and a game-high four assists, while Frederick had two goals and five points. Gaughan (3G, 1A) and rookie Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt.) with two goals and two assists each had four points. Chapman's three points led Gordon. Bates junior goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) had 16 saves in 53 minutes, while Gordon senior Nate Boyd (Beverly, Mass.) had eight stops.

Bates opens its NESCAC season with its first conference game Friday at 4 p.m. against Wesleyan University.
