MEN'S LACROSSE DROPS ECAC QUARTERFINAL GAME, 15-10, AT WILLIAMS

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Playing in some of the only dry weather in the Northeast for their first-ever meeting in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England tournament, the seventh-seeded Bates College men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-10 decision to the No. 2 Williams College Ephs.

The two teams traded goals in the opening period, with the Bobcats twice answering Williams tallies, including a man-up goal by rookie Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, Mass.) and one from senior attack Mike D'Addario (Locust Valley, N.Y.). The Ephs opened up the lead at the end of the period, when goals by senior Nick Weisser and sophomore Will Marino scored in the final 31 seconds. Williams senior Geoff Cohane scored two of the Ephs' tallies in the second period as the hosts opened an 8-3 lead at the half.

The Bobcats scored first in the second half on a tally from sophomore Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.), the team's leading goal scorer this season. Three different Williams players scored before Bates ended the period with D'Addario's third tally that cut the lead to 11-5 headed into the fourth quarter. D'Addario scored his game-high fourth goal, followed by classmate Kevin Purviance (Glastonbury, Conn.) 1:15 into the fourth quarter, as the Bobcats pulled to within four goals, their closest margin since the second period. Williams stopped the Bates momentum on a goal just 15 seconds later by Cohane, and the Bobcats would get no closer the rest of the way.

D'Addario, who had a game-high four goals, ends his career with 170 goals, 12 ahead of Shane Kokoruda on the Bobcats' all-time list, while Sandler had Bates' only other multi-goal game with two. Williams' Cohane had a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, while NIck Martinelli had five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Bates goalkeeper Dave Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.) made 11 saves in the losing effort, while Williams' Mike Buscher had 15. The Bobcats end the season at 9-7. Williams will take on Eastern Connecticut in the second round of the ECAC tournament at Wesleyan University on Saturday.
