BATES MEN HOLD OFF VASSAR, 72-67

LEWISTON, Maine - First-year guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) had a game high 24 points to lead the Bates College Bobcats (6-2) to a 72-67 victory over the Vassar College Brewers (4-3).

Neither team was able to establish a rhythm in the first half, with Vassar's six-point lead just over seven minutes into the game the biggest margin. The teams went into halftime tied at 33. Vassar sophomore forward Tirek Gayle (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 13 points at the break.

Bates opened the second half on an 13-5 run over the first eight minutes to establish a 46-38 lead they woould never relinquish. The Bobcats got two early baskets each from sophomore forward Rommel Padanou (Libreville, Gabon) and first-year center Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) in the decisive run. The Brewers closed to within one point, 48-47, at the 9:07 mark, but Bates answered with a 9-2 run that was punctuated by a Padonou dunk. The Bobcats hit six of six free throws in the final 36 seconds to preserve the lead.

Hart's 24 led all scorers, on five-of-eight shooting from 3-point range and a perfect five-of-five from the line. Hart also had eight assists in the game. After his lowest scoring output of the season in the first half, Padonou led all scorers with 14 in the second, on six-of-six shooting from the floor. Gayle led the Brewers with 17 points and eight rebounds, tying him for the game high with teammate Joe Slotnick (Cohasset, Mass.).
