BOWDOIN CAPTURES CBB OPENER, 97-79, OVER BATES

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bowdoin College senior forward David Lovely (Milton, Mass.) scored nine straight points over a 3:30 period in the second half to carry the Polar Bears (4-2) to a 97-79 victory over their in-state rivals, the Bates College Bobcats (4-2).

Bowdoin opened the game on a 13-2 run in the opening three minutes of the when senior guard Nate Houser (Medway, Mass.) hit three consecutive 3-point field goals. The Bobcats cut the lead to eight at the end of the half, finishing on a 9-3 run. Houser led all scorers at the half with 14 points.

In the second half, the teams went back and forth, with the Polar Bears establishing a 64-52 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the game. At that point, Bates made its best run of the evening, using a 12-3 spurt to make the lead as close as had it had been all game at four points. First-year guard Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) had six of the 12 points on a 3-pointer, a field goal and a free throw. First-year center Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) hit a fade away jumper at the 10 minute mark to cut the lead to 67-63, but Bowdoin pulled away from there. After a Bates timeout with 8:49 remaining, Lovely went on his tear, scoring two baskets on offensive rebounds, plus a fade away jumper and a 3-point field goal, putting the Polar Bears up 79-66 with 5:30 left in the game.

Lovely led five Polar Bears in double figures with 23 points, matching Walker for the game-high. Lovely also had 10 rebounds, tied with Bates sophomore Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) for game-high honors. Wilson had 18 points for the Bobcats.
