COLBY MEN HOLD OF BATES, 69-65

Taken from a Colby College Press Release
WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby College senior co-captain James Spidle (Easton, Mass.) scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the White Mules men's basketball team held on to defeat Bates College by a score of 69-65 on Saturday afternoon.

The White Mules (9-5) built an early 20-8 lead behind the hot shooting of junior guard Ken Allen (Monson, Maine), who scored Colby's first 15 points. The Bobcats (8-5) came back, however, tying the game at 23-23 with 6:10 left in the first half. The game would remain close throughout the rest of the half, with Colby carrying a 34-32 lead into the locker room.

The Mules came out firing once again in the second frame, as Spidle scored 13 of the team's first 20 points to give Colby a 56-43 advantage midway through the period. Despite the quick surge, however, the young Bobcats clawed their way back, getting several clutch baskets from sophomore Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) and first-year Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) to tie the game at 60-60 with 4:40 remaining in the contest.

After a Spidle scoop shot and a David Forsyth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) three-pointer gave Colby a 65-60 lead, Padonou converted a three-point play to pull Bates to within two. The White Mules answered when Spidle put back Forsyth's missed jumper to take a 67-63 lead at the one-minute mark, but Padonou cut it to two again with a lay-up forty seconds later. The Bobcats got the ball back after Colby missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the in-bounds play from an ensuing timeout forced Hart to the sideline, where the White Mules trapped him and came away with the steal.

Hart led the Bobcats with 19 points, while Padonou had 13 points and eight rebounds. Spidle had a game-high 20, while all of Allen's 19 points came in the first half for the Mules.
