BOBCATS KICK OFF SEASON WITH OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
Padonou Nets 41, Four First-Years in double figures

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bates College men's basketball team (1-0) took the first step in erasing the memories of last season with a 107-75 victory over Albertus Magnus College (0-3).

The Bobcats were led by sophomore forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon), who converted 18 of 21 shots from the floor, en route to a career-high 41 points. Padonou was consistent, making nine field goals in each half. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

With senior captain Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) out with a pulled hamstring, Padonou was helped out by a quartet of first-year starters, each of whom contributed at least 11 points. Guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) was three rebounds short of a triple-double, with 19 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Hart had three 3-point field goals in the game. Forward Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) had 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while guard Matt Moulis (Concord, N.H.) had 13 points on five-of-six shooting, including three for four from three-point range, plus eight assists. Forward Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Bobcats hit 47 of 76 shots, an astounding 61.8 percent, led by Padonou's 85.7 percent performance. It was the highest scoring output at Bates, both by the team and by an individual, since Jan. 18, 1997, when the Bobcats lost a 111-108 overtime shootout to Hamilton, when Matt Garvey '97 hit for a school record 48 points. The season-opening win was the team's first since 1995-96 and snapped a 15-game losing streak.
