BATES MEN'S HOOPS WINS SCHOOL-RECORD EIGHTH STRAIGHT GAME, 52-50, OVER WENTWORTH

BOSTON, Mass. Ð The Bates College men's basketball team posted a 52-50 win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology tonight, giving the Bobcats their eighth straight win, the longest streak in the history of the program.

The Bobcats (10-3) were led by junior guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.), who connected for a game-high 14 points, all in the first half. The Bobcats took a 24-22 lead into the locker room. The margin could have been bigger, but Bates shot just one-for-nine from the free throw line. Reserve Carmen DeMercurio led Wentworth with eight points.

Bates enjoyed a lead as large as 10 points in the second half before Wentworth crept back into the contest. The Bobcats held the ball with 50 seconds remaining and the t52-50 margin before the Leopards forced a turnover. WIT came down the floor with 17 seconds left, but the Bobcats forced a bad game-tying shot that fell harmlessly to the floor.

Hart led all scorers with 14 points, while Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) added 10. Classmate Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) overcame a cold shooting night to grab a game-high 12 rebounds. Starting guard Nick Stewart was the only Panther player in double figures with 12 points, while DeMercurio corralled 11 rebounds.
