UMF MEN DOWN BATES, 70-67

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team (6-10) dropped a tough decision to in-state rivals Maine Farmington (13-4), 70-67, in Farmington tonight. The Bobcats trailed for the entire first half and took a 39-34 deficit into the locker room despite shooting just over 50 percent from the floor (14-27). Sophomore guard Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) had 14 points in the first half, while classmate Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) had 10. The teams played even early in the second half and the Bobcats rallied to tie the game at 57 with about seven minutes left. Bates went on a 9-3 run over the next 3:25 to take a six-point lead, their biggest of the contest, with 4:35 remaining. The Beavers clamped down at that point, allowing Bates just one point over the final 3:14. UMF scored their final six points from the line to escape with the 70-67 win.

The Bobcats were paced by 17 each from Walker and Wilson, while junior Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) had a game-high 12 rebounds. UMF was led by the senior tandem of Jared Rivers, who took game-high honors with 25 points, and Daren Meader, who had 20. The Beavers outrebounded Bates, 16-9, on the offensive glass.
