BOBCATS GO DEEP TO DEFEAT THOMAS, 93-69

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team hit a season-high 15 three-point field goals as the Bobcats defeated Thomas College, 93-69, in Alumni Gym tonight.

For the men, the game was more of a contest at the outset, with the Bobcats (5-5) and Terriers (2-9) tied midway through the first half. Thomas came out shooting strong, hitting five of their first seven 3-point attempts, including three by junior Scott Raymond for nine of his game-high 26 points. After the Terriers took their biggest lead of the game at 20-15 with 10:36 left in the contest, the Bobcat went on a tear, outscoring the visitors 31-11 the rest of the way. The Bobcats hit six of their nine first-half trifectas, with four different players contributing as the Bobcats took a 46-31 lead into the locker room. Sophomore Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) led all scorers at the break, hitting six of eight shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, on his way to 15 points.

Raymond scored a quick five points to get Thomas within 11 points, the Terriers would get no closer in the second half, as the Bobcats continued their hot shooting. Bates hit six of eight from downtown in the second, with only sophomore Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) contributing more than one. The Bates perimeter defense clamped down in the second half, allowing just two of 13 from downtown, while holding the Terriers to 36 percent from the field overall for the game. Raymond led all scorers with 26 points, but no one else recorded more than 10 for Thomas. Four Bates starters reached double figures, paced by Wilson's 24 and Walker's 20. Sophomore Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) each had 13 points, while Padonou recorded a game-high 12 rebounds. The Bobcats are off for a week until Jan. 18 when they face Bowdoin in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener.
