Bates 97, Salve Regina 91 BATES SHOOTS LIGHTS OUT IN WIN OVER SALVE REGINA LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team shot a season-high 59 percent from the floor, hitting 36 of 61 shots, as the Bobcats (4-5) defeated the Salve Regina University Seahawks (5-5), 97-91, in Alumni Gym today. The Bobcats opened up a 43-35 lead in the first half by shooting 54.8 percent from the field. Bates extended the lead to 19 points at 59-40 early in the second half by hitting seven of their first nine shots on a 16-5 run over the first five minutes of the stanza. Though the lead stayed in double figures for much of the game thanks to Bates' 63 percent shooting in the second half (19-30), Salve Regina clawed their way back in the game late, forcing seven turnovers in the last six minutes to cut the lead to as little as five points with under a minute remaining. But first-year guard Matt LaPointe (Beverly, Mass.) hit all eight of his free throws down the stretch to lead the Bobcats to victory. Bates was led by sophomore forward Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.), who recorded his second double-double of the season with 24 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) had 21 points, including four-of-five 3-pointers, while LaPointe also registered a double double with 13 points and a game-high 11 assists. Salve Regina placed five players in double-figures, led by junior guard David Keddy (Quincy, Mass.), who had 21 points while shooting eight-of-10 from the floor, and first-year guard Rafael Cardozo (Shelton, Conn.), who had 19 points and four steals. Junior Alick Furtick (Groton, Conn.) had a game-high 13 rebounds for Salve Regina. In addition to their season-high field-goal percentage, Bates also hit 55.6 percent of 3-pointers (10-18) and 88.2 percent from the free throw line (15-17), all season-best performances.
