WILSON DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS BATES PAST GORDON, 92-78 LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore forward Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded season-highs with 24 points and 13 rebounds as the Bates College men's basketball team defeated the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots, 92-78, in a non-conference game in Alumni Gym tonight. Leading 38-33 at halftime, the Bobcats (3-1) opened the second stanza with an 18-1 run over the first 5:35 behind four 3-pointers, including two by sophomore forward Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.). Gordon clawed back into the game by going on an 11-2 run in which they converted field goals on four straight Bates turnovers. The Scots (0-4) got as close as eight points, at 82-74, when senior guard Ben Hodges (Amesbury, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws with 2:33 to go, but the Bobcats were able hold off the surge. Bates shot 54 percent in the second (19-35), compared 38 percent for Gordon (15-39). Wilson and Gordon's Darren Stewart (No. Amity, Maine) tied for game-high scoring honors with 24 points, while Wilson's 13 rebounds were also game-high. The Bobcats also got double-double performances from junior Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon; 19 points, 11 rebounds) and first-year point guard Matt LaPointe (Beverly, Mass.; 11 points, 10 assists). First-year center Keith Wedemeyer (Houston, Texas) led Gordon with nine rebounds. The Bobcats next take the floor at the Anna Maria College Tournament. Bates faces Mass. College of Liberal Arts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, a correction from the previous schedule.
