COLBY TOPS BATES, 79-64

LEWISTON, Maine -- The visiting Colby College White Mules recorded the 499th career win for long time head coach Dick Whitmore as they defeated rivals Bates College, 79-64, in a game that does not count in the NESCAC standings.

Colby led by 10 points after seven minutes of play thanks to hot shooting, including their first six shots and nine of their first 10. Trailing 32-24 with 7:26 left in the half, Bates (5-7) rallied to take a one-point lead by going on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes, hitting six of eight free throws with a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) thrown in. Colby answered by scoring 14 of the final 20 points of the half, including three free throws by senior Ken Allen (Monson, Maine) with no time on the clock. Allen had 16 of his game-high 23 points before the break.

The Mules opened the second half strong, outscoring the Bobcats 14-3 over the first eight minutes, capped by an Allen 3-pointer that gave Colby a 64-48 lead. Bates got as close as 10 points with 6:34 to go, but could not get any closer.

Allen led all scorers with 23 points, while senior Sam Clark (Woolwich, Maine) had 22 on eight-of-11 shooting. Sophomore Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) led Bates with 17 points, while junior Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
