PORTLAND, Maine -- Bates College sophomore sophomore Andy Kadin (Short Hills, N.J.) earned a tie for sixth place with a four-over-par 76, just three strokes off the lead, as the Bobcats placed fifth at the Maine Intercollegiate Golf Championships at Riverside Golf Course in Portland.

The Bobcats improved five places and 25 strokes over their performance at the State meet from a year ago while finishing within eight strokes of the winners from Thomas College. Kadin's performance was up nine strokes from the 2000 meet.

Bates' next three golfers also performed well. Rookie Mike Hartney (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior team captain Doug Aho (Congers, N.Y.) tied with two others for 20th place, while sophomore Dominic Lee (Silver Springs, Md.) was right behind them with an 81.

The Bobcats finished two strokes ahead of Colby and seven ahead of Bowdoin among CBB schools. Bates will face both teams, plus the rest of the NESCAC at the conference championships at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass., this weekend.
