BATES BLASTS BOWDOIN, 38-7, TO WIN CBB TITLE
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College football team clinched their first outright title in the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) conference since 1986 with a 38-7 victory over rival Bowdoin College on Garcelon Field today.
The Bobcats (3-4) dominated the game from the outset, opening up a 17-0 lead by halftime. Bates outgained Bowdoin (1-6) 372 to 115, including 176 to 49 in the first half. Senior quarterback Matt Bazirgan (Newbury, Mass.) completed 14 of 23 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown to senior wide receiver Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.). Coulie's 35-yard TD reception early in the fourth quarter was his 61st catch this year, establishing a new Bates single-season record. Coulie had eight catches for 111 yards on the day, his fifth 100-yard game of the season.
The Bobcats defense was equally impressive, holding Bowdoin junior quarterback Kyle Quinn (Canton, Mass.) to zero-for-nine passing in the first half and six-for-22 and 56 yards for the game. The Bobcats also sacked the Bowdoin QBs seven times for 57 yards of losses. Senior linebacker Jason Silva (Methuen, Mass.) had five tackles, 1.5 sacks for 25 yards and an interception.
Bates even got great play from their special teams, as junior kicker Rejean Guerriero (Spofford, N.H.) tied his season-long with a 33-yard field goal in the first half and junior punter Jason Place (Carver, Mass.) broke a school record with a 70-yard punt in the third quarter.
The win for the Bobcats give Bates its first three-win season since 1985 and their first outright CBB title since 1986. There was a three-way tie for the title in 1995, the last time Bates defeated the Polar Bears. The 38 points scored matches the most for Bobcats in their 102-year rivalry against Bowdoin, set in 1968. It was also Bates' biggest scoring output in any game since 1987.
