TUFTS FOOTBALL TOPS BATES, 41-12

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Tufts University Jumbos totaled for 340 yards rushing, including 156 yards on 27 carries by junior tailback Keven Kelley (Natick, Mass.), as the Jumbos defeated the host Bates College Bobcats, 41-12, on Garcelon Field

Tufts (2-0) opened the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown strike from junior QB Scott Treacy (Wakefield, Mass.) to sophomore Matt Cerne (Atkinson, N.H.) on the first play of their second possession of the game. Treacy scored a TD of his own on a one-yard sneak with 2:02 left in the first period before junior Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, Ore.) added a 60-yard punt return to give the Jumbos a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter. A seven-yard Treacy scramble extended the lead before Bates (0-2) scored its first offensive touchdown of the season on a 33-yard pass from junior Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.) to running back Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.) with 3:27 left in the first half.

In addition to Kelley's big rushing day, his second 150-yard performance of the season, junior Chuck McGraw (Morgantown, N.C.) added 62 yards and senior Renato DePaolis (No. Attleboro, Mass.) had 52 and a touchdown. Bates' Atkins had 97 yards rushing, plus his 33-yard TD reception.

Bates travels to Williams next week for their first road game of the season, while Tufts takes on Bowdoin in the Jumbos home opener.
