MIDDLEBURY DOWNS BATES, 17-10

LEWISTON, Maine -- Middlebury College junior wide receiver Denny Smith (Wyebridge, Vt.) had 13 catches for 204 yards and his team's only two touchdowns of the game as the Panthers (2-3) defeated the host Bates College Bobcats (0-5), 17-10, on Garcelon Field today.

Smith opened the scoring on a 43-yard reception from senior quarterback Scott Roberts (Madison, Conn.) with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Bates got on the board with 11 seconds left in the stanza on a 40-yard field goal by sophomore Nat Carr (Cambridge, Mass.). Middlebury took a 10-3 lead into the locker room with Mike Frissora's (Sudbury, Mass.) 26-yard field goal as the half expired.

Bates tied the game on a 48-yard pass from junior Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.) to sophomore Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) nine minutes into the third period. Roberts connected with Smith for the game-winning touchdown just three plays later from 49 yards out as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Smith's 204-yard performance was the second-best in Middlebury history, behind only his own 228-yard day against Colby on Sept. 29. Jankoski and Roberts each had career-best performances at quarterback, with Jankoski completing 19 of 31 passes for 241 yards and Roberts going 19 of 33 for 257.

Panther junior running back Bill Lazzaro (Manlius, N.J.) rushed for 103 yards on the day, while Bates junior Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.) had 46 yards on 16 carries before leaving the game win an injury. Miehe also had a big day receiving for the Bobcats with 164 yards on seven catches.

Bates opens the CBB series next week at Colby, while Middlebury plays host to Trinity.
