COLBY BLANKS BATES, 42-0

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College White Mules (3-3) took control of the game early and never looked back en route a 42-0 win in the 2001 CBB championship opener over the visiting Bates College Bobcats (0-6).

Colby scored on each of its three possessions in the first quarter to open up a 21-0 lead after the first period. The Bobcats' defense improved in the second quarter and most of the third. Colby added a late TD in third and two in the fourth, while the Bobcats were stopped three times on fourth down in the contest. Bates' best drive was a 10-play, 83-yard drive that started at their own one-yard line, but the Bobcats were unable to convert on fourth down at the Colby 16.

Wide receiver Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) led the Bobcats with four receptions, while rookie tight end Adam Ranks (Stratham, N.H.) had two catches for 53 yards. Junior QB Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.) completed 11 of 24 passes for 120 yards. Colby was paced by senior wideout Danny Noyes, who had 65 yards rushing and 209 receiving for 274 all-purpose yards.

Bates hosts Bowdoin next week in the second leg of the CBB, while Colby travels to Brunswick in two weeks to try to clinch their second title in a row.
