MIDDLEBURY BLANKS BATES, 31-0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Playing without top running back Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.) and facing one of the best defenses in the NESCAC, the Bates College football team (0-5) suffered its first shutout since 1998, 31-0, at the hands of conference co-leader Middlebury (4-1) today.
The Panthers were led by junior tailback Bryan Sanchez, who rushed for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 26 carries, including 203 yards in the first half. After grabbing a 3-0 lead midway through the first period, the Panthers took advantage of a bad snap on a Bates punt to score their first touchdown of the game with 11:51 left in the second quarter. Sanchez scored twice more before the intermission, including a 73-yard scamper with just 37 seconds remaining before halftime.
Sophomore Mark Vankeuren (Arlington, Mass.) gained 47 yards on the ground in place of Atkins. Bates quarterbacks Steve Barry (Boston, Mass.) and Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.) combined to throw for 157 yards on 17-of-39 passing. Defensive lineman Ryan Gray (Mansfield, Mass.) also had a fine day, registering nine tackles, including six solo and four for a loss.
The Bobcats open up CBB play next week against 4-1 Colby. Bates will be looking for its fourth straight win against the White Mules.
