BATES TOPS SIMMONS, 2-0, UNDER THE LIGHTS

Boston, Mass. -- The Bates College field hockey team (3-5) earned its second straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over the Simmons College Sharks in a 7 p.m. start in Boston.

Both Bates goals and one assist came from first-year players. Forward Amanda Slocum got the scoring started with her second tally of the season with 6:27 remaining in the first half on an assist from Virginia Hurley. The Bobcats scored an insurance goal when sophomore Nicole St. Jean's shot after a penalty corner was deflected home by first-year Kara Conceison with one second left in the half.

Sophomore goalkeeper Peggy Ficks made four saves in her second shoutout of the season, and the Bobcats' second in a row.
