After an even first half, the Middlebury College Panthers (2-0) scored twice in the second to defeat the Bates College Bobcats (0-2), 2-0.

The Bobcats played a tough defensive game. Senior co-captain Molly McMahon (Cumberland, Maine) was successful in shutting down Middlebury All-American Heidi Howard, who scored five goals n last year's game.

In the second half, the Panthers were twice able to knock the ball past Bates goalkeeper Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.) through a scramble in front of the net. Ficks had 16 saves in the afternoon.
