The Bates College Bobcats (1-0) opened their season with a strong performance today, shutting out the Simmons College Sharks (0-1), 3-0. Senior forward Jesse Klein (Montpelier, Vt), last season's top goal scorer for the Bobcats led the way with a pair of goals, while first-year midfielder Abby Lenhart (Bethesda, Md.) had two assists. First-year forward Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the other goal, while junior Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) had an assist. First-year goalie Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.), making her first career start, and junior co-captain Wendy Zimmerman combined to make nine saves in the victory.

Bates at Middlebury, Sept. 13, 1997 - After getting off to a strong start on Wednesday, the Bobcats (1-1) faced a tough opponent in perrenial power Middlebury (1-0) on their home field and fell, 5-0. The Bobcats had a goal disallowed with 10 minutes left in the first half when junior Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, md.) was judged to have brought the stick too high on the shot. Bates first-year goalie Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made an astounding 22 saves, but was done in by a Middlebury front line which featured an All-American who scored all five Panther goals.

Trinity at Bates, Sept. 20, 1997 - In their second straight game with a 1996 postseason qualifier, coach Stacey Watts field hockey team (1-2) lost a difficult 2-1 decsion to Trinity (2-0). The Bantams' only two goals came on penalty strokes, while first-year forward Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) redirected home a shot from just inside the circle off the stick of junior Rosie Lenehan (Concord, N.H.) with less than a minute remaining in the first half to tie the game at one. First-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) had another outstanding game in goal, allowing just the the two penalty stroke to get past, while making 27 saves.

Bates at Stonehill, Sept. 25, 1997 - Coach Stacey Watts got an outstanding performance from her defense as the Bobcats posted a 1-0 shutout over Division II Stonehill College Thursday. Junior Rosie Lenehan (Concord, N.H.) scored the only goal of the game at the 25 minute mark of the second half. Stonehill was on the wrong end of a controversial call later in the game when a goal was disallowed because it was shot from outside the circle and not touched before it went in the net. First-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made 10 saves for her second career shutout.

Tufts at Bates, Sept. 27, 1997 In a well played, back-and-forth game, the Bobcats (3-2) score twice in the second half to defeat Tufts (2-3) for the first time since 1994. In the first period, the Jumbo were able to convert a scramble in front of the net into their only goal of the game. Sophomore Kate Orellana (Middlebury, Vt.) notched the equalizer three and a half minutes into the second half, converting a penalty corner from junior Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.). Seven minutes later, First-year player Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored her third goal of the season, redirecting a shot from the top of the circle off the stick of classmate Nicole St. Jean (Kensington, N.H.).

Bates at Gordon, Oct. 2, 1997 - The Bobcats (4-2) extended their winning streak to three today by defeating Gordon College on the road. Bates took a lead 20 minutes into the first half on a goal from first-year forward Sarah McGrath (Middlebury, Vt.) who converted a pass across the top of the circle from sophomore Molly McMahon (Cumberland, Maine). The Scots tied the game in the last seven minutes of the half. Junior Rosie Lenehan (concord, N.H.) converted a corner from classmate Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) early in the second half to put the Bobcats up 2-1. Gordon again tied the game, deflecting a shot off a Bates defender seven minutes later. First-year forward Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the team's leading scorer, notched the game-winning goal with just over 10 minutes left in the game with an assist from Lenehan. NESCAC Co-Player of the Week Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made five saves in the win.

The second was scored on a three-on-one breakaway. The Bobcats had several chances in close but could not convert. First-year goalie Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) had 18 saves in the loss.

UMaine Farmington at Bates, Oct. 8, 1997 - Junior Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored her first goal of the season and her second career overtime goal to lead the Bates College Bobcats (5-3) to their fourth win in five games by defeating the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers (5-5), 2-1. Schall's goal came justover four minutes into the extra frame. Earlier in the OT, first-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) averted a Bates loss by coming far out of the cage to break up a Beaver two-on-one break. Schall scored on the ensuing trip down the field. The Bobcats got on the board first when first-year forward Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, redirecting a shot from classmate Sarah McGrath (Middlebury, Vt.) with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. UMF answered on a converted a rebound off a penalty corner at the 12:17 mark.

Elms at Bates, Oct. 13, 1997 - Coach Stacey Watts' field hockey team (6-3) won their fifth game in six tries, crushing Elm sCollege (0-8), 6-0, avenging a 2-1 overtime loss last year. Junior Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.), who hadn't scored a goal all season until notching the winner in overtime on Thursday, scored a career high four in one game. Junior Rosie Lenehan (Concord, N.H.) was the day's only other multiple scorer , picking up a pair of assists. Goalkeepers Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) and Wendy Zimmerman (Denver Colo.) each played one half of the shutout.

Bates at Connecticut College, Oct. 18, 1997 - The Bobcats' (6-4) two-game winning streak came to a halt as they fell, 2-1, to Connecticut College (5-6) on the Camels' homecoming weekend. After a scoreless first half, the Camels opened the scoring less then ten minutes into the second. They added a much-needed insurance goal with 8:37 left in the game, because junior forward Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored her sixth goal in the last three games with 4:10 left in the game. Conn College was able to keep the ball away from the Bobcats' offense in the remaining time, however, to maintain the win. First-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) had 15 saves to keep Bates in the game.

Bates at New England College, Oct. 20, 1997 - Senior forward Jesse Klein (Montpelier, Vt.) notched her first career hat trick as the Bobcats (7-4) clinched a .500 record for the second time in three years with a 4-3 win at New England College. Klein, who scored twice against the Pilgrims a year ago, scored her first two goals less than three minutes apart in the first half. NEC came back to score the next two goals, one with under five minutes left in the half, the other eight minutes into the second. Klein broke the tie with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but it was junior forward Amanda Schall's (Chevy Chase, Md.) team-leading seventh goal of the season with 1:40 left which proved to be the game-winner when the Pilgrims scored with 34 second left. Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) assisted Klein's first goal, while junior halfback Molly McMahon (Cumberland, Maine) assisted the next two. Sophomore Stephanie Hellert (Washington, D.C.) assisted the game-winner. First-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) and junior goalie Wendy Zimmerman (Denver, Colo.) split time in goal. Ficks made eight saves and allowed one goal, while Zimmerman had 10 saves and two goals.

Bates at Colby, Oct. 25, 1997 - The Bobcats (8-4) equaled their highest win total in the past 11 seasons with a 1-0 victory over Colby (3-9). After a back and forth game over the first 60 minutes, junior forward Amanda Schall (Chevy Chase, Md.) picked up her team-leading eighth goal of the season, knocking home the ball through a crowd with 6:47 remaining. First-year goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made 10 saves in her fourth shutout of the season. The Bobcats have now won four out of five and are ranked fourth in New England East action with two games remaining.
