MIDDLEBURY FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS BATES, 4-1

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- (Taken from a Middlebury press release) In their home opener, the defending NCAA Division III field hockey champion Middlebury College Panthers defeated the visiting Bates College Bobcats, 4-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats got on the board first as sophomore forward Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) scored just two minutes, beating Panther goalkeeper Becca Randall through a crowd. The Panthers responded with three unanswered goals less than five minutes apart. The second of the game by Jacqui Martin with 14 minutes remaining sealed the victory for the Panthers.

Randall made 16 saves in the winning effort, while Bates junior Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made 10 saves.
