BOBCATS WIN THIRD IN A ROW, 2-1, OVER GORDON

WENHAM, Mass. -- The Bates College field hockey team won its third straight game today, knocking off Gordon College, the No. 2-ranked team in the most recent NCAA Division III New England East Region poll, 2-1.

The Bobcats struck first in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Ginny Hurley (Revere, Mass.) got the ball close to the Bobcats' circle and took it the length of the field, beating several Fighting Scot defenders. Hurley dumped the ball off to first-year forward Johie Farrar (West Paris, Maine), who scored her fourth goal in the last three games.

Gordon tied the game with 10:16 left in regulation, but the Bobcats picked up the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining, as first-year forward Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.) maneuvered the ball into the circle, then passed to sophomore Kara Conceison (Watertown, Mass.), who faked the Gordon keeper, then lifted the ball past her.

Bates goalkeeper and NESCAC co-player of the week Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made seven saves for her third win of the season. The Bobcats play host to Tufts, 3-0 winner over Wheaton College today, for Celebrate Bates! weekend.

Note: The NESCAC and Little East conferences are in the New England West region, while the NEWMAC and Commonwealth Coast Conferences are in New England East.
