BATES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS SEASON OPENER
TO NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE, 6-3

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Bates College field hockey team jumped out to an early lead, but the Bobcats (0-1) could not hold on in their season opener, dropping a 6-3 decision to the host New England College Pilgrims (2-0) here today.

Bates got on the board first less than 10 minutes into the contest on a goal by junior forward Johie Farrar (West Paris, Maine) with an assist from classmate Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.). Sophomore Anne Schauer (Louisville, Ky.) tallied an unassisted goal at the 21:56 mark to give Bates a 2-0 lead. New England College bounced back as junior Laura Buffa (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored the first of her four goals on the afternoon just over four minutes later. The Pilgrims tied the scored with 10 minutes remaining in the half on a goal by rookie Laura Inman. Price and Farrar connected again early in the second half as Bates regained the lead, but Buffa scored three more goals in the final 20 minutes and Inman also tallied again as the Pilgrims avenged one of their two regular-season losses from 2000.

Bates junior Lindsay Gary (Del Mar, Calif.) made eight saves in her first career start, while New England College junior Krista Milroy (W. Springfield, Mass.) had seven stops in the winning effort.
