BATES FALLS TO COLBY, 3-1
Bobcats' postseason chances spoiled

WATERVILLE, Maine -- With a 3-1 loss at the hands of their rival Colby College, the Bates College field hockey team was officially eliminated from postseason play this afternoon.

Colby (8-5, 5-3 NESCAC) scored the only goal of the first half on a penalty stroke by senior Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) with 7:53 to go in the stanza. Bates came out firing in the second half as the senior tandem of Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) to Ginny Hurley (Revere, Mass.) combined as Hurley scored her first goal of the season just four minutes into the second period. Junior goalkeeper Lindsay gary (Del Mar, Cal.) was outstanding in keeping the Bobcats within striking distance by recording 29 saves, a career-high and just five short of a school record. Unfortunately, the Mules broke through with just 5:21 left in regulation on a goal by rooke Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.). Bonner then gave Colby an insurance goal less than one minute later to ice the contest.

Bates (2-10, 1-7 NESCAC) could still have qualified for the conference championships with wins over colby and Connecticut College, which likely would have tied the Bobcats and Camels along with Trinity for the seventh spot in the conference, with Bates owning the head-to-head tiebreakers.
