BATES DROPS OT THRILLER TO WILLIAMS, 2-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team (6-4, 2-4 NESCAC) became just the second team to score against Williams (8-0, 4-0 NESCAC) this season, but the Ephs prevailed in overtime, 2-1.

Williams scored first with less than six minutes remaining in the first half, when rookie Molly Jennings (Greenwich, Conn.) converted a penalty corner feed from senior Sarah Committo (Montpelier, Vt.). The Bobcats broke through late in the game when sophomore Johie Farrar (W. Paris, Maine) drove some 50 yards with the ball before finding classmate Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.), who set up rookie Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Bobcats had a chance to hand Williams its first loss of the season in the first overtime when Price stepped up for a penalty stroke, but Ephs' sophomore keeper Monelle Quevillon (Masouch, Quebec) made the save. Williams went on to score 10 minutes before the match went to penalty strokes when senior Ali Stepp (Holderness, N.H.) got her own rebound from Bates keeper Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.) and sent the ball to sophomore Stefanie Noering (Cohasset, Mass.), who ended the game.

Quevillon made 11 saves in the win, while Ficks had 14 stops in the losing effort. Williams entered the game ranked 17th in the nation.
